2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are far from new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. But, their visibility has noticeably surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are bona fide amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this phenomenon, I performed a detailed review into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the broader culture is also apparent elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming appears especially strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs possess inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

Should these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be on the verge of a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
